Description
TEGO® Care 165 MB (Glyceryl Stearate; PEG-100 Stearate)
Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate is a very versatile non-ionic oil-in-water emulsifier that creates silky smooth, ultra-light emulsions. Most datasheets I’ve seen state the content of each Glyceryl Stearate and PEG-100 Stearate as 48–52%, which averages out to a 50/50 blend.
Tego Care 165 is a non-ionic emulsifier used in cosmetic formulations, especially for oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions like lotions, creams, and serums.
This emulsifier is manufactured by a lot of different companies, so it ends up having a lot of different names, including (but not limited to):
- Arlacel™ 165 (Croda)
- Radia 7490 (Oleon)
- Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate (Solvay Novecare)
- CreamMaker Blend (MakingCosmetics)
- HallStar® GMS SE/AS (Hallstar)
- Lexemul® 561 MB (INOLEX)
- Lonzest™ MSA Glyceryl Stearate (Lonza)
- SIMULSOL™ 165 (SEPPIC)
- TEGO® Care 165 (Evonik Operations GmbH)
- iEmul 165 (Polybase 165) (Cosphatech LLC)
- LotionPro 165 (Lotion Crafter)
It is a self-emulsifying, acid-stable emulsifier blend which includes glyceryl stearate and polyoxyethylene stearate (PEG-100 stearate). It forms highly stable oil-in-water emulsions with excellent appearance and feel. It is often used with cetearyl alcohol or other fatty alcohols (as thickeners) in formulations.
While some self-emulsifiers (like Emulsifying Wax NF) can thicken a lotion made without butters, fatty acid or alcohol waxes, or water phase thickeners like xanthan gum, Tego Care 165 will not. The job of an emulsifier is to marry oil in water in a stable mixture and this product does very well. Thickening your formulation to the consistency you want is done through the use of oil and water phase thickeners, as mentioned above. It can create lotions that are lighter and fluffier than those made with Emulsifying Wax NF, with a less waxy feel, and it is also able to create buttery formulations when combined with fatty alcohols and water-phase thickeners (see our Body Butter Bliss formulation linked on the Formulary tab).
